Artist statement

Creativity….. imagination….. design……
My name is Nii Ankamah and I’m an artist.
I have always wanted to make other things in addition to paintings… it’s a drive I have always had but never thought much of what I could have done with wood until I curiously sawed through a piece of worn-out termite-infested tree trunk and came upon something unexpected…Beauty and design.
Thus begun my arduous journey working with wood and other products to make not just tables but functional interior design elements.I see design in everything: even design in singular unexpected sources.. It takes courage to want to transform a piece of wood that’s lying desolate and rotting away into something wonderful and exciting
For me designing and constructing comes with a lot of frustration and excitement, uncertainty, and eagerness.
There is this constant urge to want to create, explore and examine. The creative process never stops.. it’s a never-ending cycle that consumes me.. it takes me on a journey of creating and recreating over and over and over till exhaustion ..
Anybody with a technical skill can make something but it’s another thing to have an intrinsic connection and understanding of how best to make a particular thing look great. I look at a piece of wood like one looks upon a lover … I imagine all the beautiful things I can do with it .. and then choose the best..wood, like a muse avails itself if you pander to it. it takes the right attitude, time, courage, and especially patience. Ideas will flood your mind but the real test is picking the right one that’s in sync with your mood at the right moment in time to work on.. the end result is nothing shy of perfection…My work is only complete when it’s Emotionally satisfying and aesthetically pleasing
